Days Out: Birds and a Brew

Days Out: Birds and a Brew @ The Nature Discovery Centre

So on the first day of my 'proper' retirement (i.e. after all the Xmas festivities and so on), I received an email from The Berks, Bucks and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. About a year ago I'd stumbled on the BBOWT website, and signed up to the newsletter. Its an interesting organisation - they manage 72 nature reserves across the 3 counties - who'd have thought

Anyway in said email was an invite to a talk and walk called "Birds and a Brew", where the idea was that there would be a chat about the Redwings roosting @ The Nature Discovery centre at the Reed beds near Thatcham. And it was on a Friday afternoon.

Now I'm no Bird Watcher - but.....what went through my head was.....interesting, never been to that place..........and I like being out in nature............and Redwing Roosting sounds intriguing.....and I'm now retired............and I said I'd just do different things................and well next thing I knew I'd signed up :-)

So as it turned out, it was really interesting. The lady giving the talk/walk was lovely - engaging and knowledgeable, and the place was great. I did however bring the average age of the group down by a considerable amount, and the gender mix of males up somewhat - but hey - everyone was nice.

As it turned out, we didn't see many Redwings and certainly not roosting, but we did see a couple of Bullfinch, which caused a lot of excitement (not my photo). Spending 10 minutes watching these through 'the bins' and listening to the 'twitters' discussing them was actually remarkably good fun.

I will may be back.
