ABC: West Midlands: Kitchen: B:eats

Summary (by AI): I visited B:Eats in Birmingham's Symphony Hall to try a Brummy bacon cake, but I found the experience underwhelming and the food lacking in flavor.

Blog: When I was researching food in the West Midlands and Birmingham, I kept coming across posts for a place called B:Eats. It looked really cool, and they specifically talked about it serving these things called "Brummy bacon cakes." I thought, you know what, I'll give it a go. Unfortunately, I didn't research it too thoroughly beforehand.

I ended up going to the location on Google Maps. I knew it was in the Symphony Hall, but I hadn't quite realized that it was basically just the Symphony Hall cafe. I thought it was going to be a bit more of a posh restaurant. I walked around the Symphony Hall for ages literally looking for a restaurant before I realized that the cafe itself was the cleverly titled "B:Eats."

Anyway, I decided to give it a go regardless, especially since the Hairy Bikers had been there and eaten these Brummy bacon cakes themselves. So, I sat there on my own with a cup of tea and one of the bacon cakes.

I have to say, the overall experience was pretty underwhelming. The bacon cake itself was effectively a scone that apparently included cheese, bacon, and a bit of Worcestershire sauce. But you know what? It didn't really have that much flavor. It certainly didn't punch you with bacon flavor the way a bacon sarnie does.

To be honest, I don't really think it's a traditional food of Birmingham. It seems like a bit of a modern invention. Because I was pretty much the only person there, I did feel like a bit of a lemon sitting by myself taking photos of a scone in the middle of the day. But hey, this is what the ABC does!

It definitely got me to visit a part of Birmingham I would have never gone to otherwise—the Symphony Hall—and I've now eaten a Brummy bacon cake, which I’d never even heard of before. Though, I'm not 100% sure I'll ever eat one again.
